The 28 year-old high jumper was born in Abbeville in Mississippi to Michael, and Sharon. Though born in Abbeville, he grew up in Oxford with his sister. 

McEwen was an active kid from his childhood. He came to love jumping ever since he was a seven-year-old second-grader playing in his backyard.

Seeing him jump, his parents brought him a trampoline. He used to play a lot in it. 

However, one day he fell from it while jumping and cracked his head open. His parents took him to the hospital and got him stitches.

When they came back home, McEwen again started jumping and again cracked his head.

No matter how many times he cracked his head open, he never gave up jumping on the trampoline. It was then that his parents knew their son was going to pursue high jumping and become a track and field athlete.

However, McEwen was passionate about basketball. He prioritized basketball over jumping.

In 2014, he even won the dunk contest organized by Jordan Brand with the signature free throw dunk of Michael Jordan.

However, later he realized that he preferred a career in field and track than in basketball. So, he started his career as a high jumper and transferred to another university.

Besides jumping and playing basketball, McEwen also has a thing for videogames and fishing.

Education

McEwen completed his high school at the Oxford high school, located in Oxford, Mississippi, where he grew up.

Once he completed high school, he enrolled in Northeast Mississippi Community College to pursue a career in basketball.

However, he had a change of heart and then got transferred to the University of Alabama, where he continued his passion for jumping instead.

Career

Initially, McEwen wanted to have a career in basketball ever since he started playing it during his eighth grade. He even became the basketball player of the year during his high school.

He joined the Northeast Mississippi Community College to pursue basketball but always loved track and field.

Eventually, he shifted towards high jump from basketball and started jumping in competitions. He had the passion as well as skills for jumping, for which he started getting many options.

Finally, he chose the University of Alabama and moved there to pursue his career in the high jump as a track and field athlete.

He then went to win the national championship and SEC championship in the high jump. He also won a gold in the Indoor Championship organized by USATF. Besides these, he also was part of many more championships, where he impressed everyone with his high jumps. 

He had an active career when he was in college. But even after graduating from college, he kept his passion alive.

After graduation, he moved to the University of Louisville to train for the 2020 Olympics. During this period, he even broke his personal best record by jumping 2.33 m, just before a few weeks of the US Olympic trials.

It pulled him to the third rank among the high jumpers of the world. It also motivated him for the upcoming trials.

It came as no surprise when McEwen competed in the Olympic trials held in Eugene and won third place.

He was finally part of the US Olympic team. He finally represented team USA in the high jump during the ongoing Olympic games on 30th July. 

He came fourth in the semi-final in group A by jumping 2.28m and now will compete for the gold in the final game on 1st August.
