Long started his career when he was still in high school. He started free solo climbing when he was in high school. It was also he who made it trendy. He even introduced it to fellow late climber John Bachar.

He then joined other climbers and formed a group of extreme adventurers called Stonemasters. The group popularized adventurous sports like big wave surfing, rafting, and extreme skiing in Eastern Europe and the USA.

Besides traveling with the group, Long also climbed other tough routes alone and with other people. He made many firsts in climbing history. Long successfully made a one-day climb on the Nose route of the El Capitan. He then expanded his ascent to many other tall places like the Leaning Tower, Half Dome, etc.

While still enjoying the mountains as a climber, he also started creating photo articles during his journey. Two of his photo articles also made it to Climbing magazine.

Long was already a popular name within the climber community, but his success on the Paisano Overhang of the Suicide Rock brought more limelight to his name. It was the first time anyone had ever free-climbed a 5.12-grade climb of such technical difficulties.

He then took his free to ascend to the Eastern Face of Washington Column, which became the most pronounced free climb in the world for more than two decades.

He then climbed the Chouinard-Herbert route, making it the second big wall climb in climbing history.

Long spent years in the USA before taking his journey to an international level. During this time, he even traveled to the North Pole.

After having an adventurous life for quite a while, he worked as an author. He worked for David Frost Production as a writer and producer. He made many specials for ABC and BBC. 

It was only the start of his career as a writer, as, after that, he became the writer and producer for many sports shows for big names like Fox, CBS, RUSH, etc.
