Laurie Lewis’s Professional Career

Laurie Lewis began her solo career in the mid-1980s with a series of album releases under her own name, and she is also known for her continuing collaborations with other musicians. Bluegrass musician, Tim O’Brien helped Laurie to launch her first solo album incorporating her seven original songs titled Restless Rambling Heart. The album was released in 1986 under the music label Flying Fish Records(now: Rounder Records).

The release of the album took off Laurie’s musical career and boosted her confidence as a singer and songwriter.

Laurie has 20 albums as a singer and songwriter and 14 as a producer under her belt to date. Since her debut, she has worked under various music labels and with some of the notable names in the industry. Laurie has been associated with Signature Sounds, HighTone, and so on. Besides, working for various labels, Laurie launched her own label Spruce & Maple Music in 2001.

Throughout Laurie’s career, she performed for different bands and founded some of the bands herself. In the early 70s, she was a member of the bluegrass band “The Phantoms of the Opry”. After the band disbanded Laurie and Kathy Kallick founded a bluegrass band named “Good Ol’ Persons”. 

Later on, Laurie again went on to form another band named “Laurie Lewis and Grant Street” in the late 80s. Her long-term music partner Tom Rozum joined her band Grant Street in 1986 and since then the duos musical relationship has now lasted for three decades. Currently, she plays in the band named” Laurie Lewis and the Right Hands”.

Laurie is a devoted music educator who has taught at prestigious camps, festivals, and workshops throughout the United States and Canada. A great musician and educator, she has achieved great success. Furthermore, Laurie was awarded IBMA’s “Female Vocalist of the Year” twice. She has had a particular influence on women in bluegrass, who were historically underrepresented on bluegrass stages.
