In 2014, he was deployed to the War in Afghanistan for 7 months and was awarded the Joint Service Commendation Medal for his service. However, he resigned from the U.S. Navy Reserve in 2017.
In regards to his political career, Pete initiated his political career being a political campaign activist as well as a research specialist of several Democratic politicians before he was elected Mayor of South Bend in 2012.
